Humanities teach students to think. Where would we be without them?

By Francine Prose. Posted 12/05/2017. Assessed 5/12/2019

The article tells us about humanities. Humanities are academic disciplines that learn aspects of human society and culture. The author pointed out that there is a plan to eliminate several of the college’s well-regarded departments. He gives a lot of examples of protest against the decision. Francine Prose tried to explain how important humanity is. Although there is a decrease of studying humanities, these sciences make people to be creative, to learn foreign nation and culture, to know yourself.

First of all, people who learn humanities are more creative than techies. Such person is able to solve the problem in a completely new way. He adds just one original detail or absolutely change the concept of decision making. In communication creativity helps to overcome barriers and stereotypes. The humanity shows that there are various solutions of one issue.

Secondly, if you know foreign languages, you will have a lot of opportunities to fulfill your potential. The most exciting thing is learning foreign culture, traditions etc. Due to this knowledge, you have a chance to travel, to make new friends. It is always exciting to discover something new, different ways of life. The other culture broadens the mind so that you will be a competitive worker.

Thirdly, if you learn humanities, you have to ask a lot of questions about yourself, about the world. This science calls philosophy, it is a special study of self-knowledge. The aim of philosophy is to take person out of the ordinary, to give his life a true sense, to open the way to the most important values.

In conclusion, the author persuades that humanities open perspectives without which it is impossible to continue our existence. They can’t be replaced by latest technology.

I used to use books such as “ New English File”, “English Grammar” etc. Nowadays, we have a wonderful opportunity to use a big amount of resources. I would like to tell you about the website “TED”, which helps me to develop listening skills. TED    is a media organization, that posts a video about up-to-date issues. On the website, the user sees some insets, where he or she can follow the transcript, comments from author and other users. Due to the transcript, you will enlarge and pick up new vocabulary.
